Deans is a great Health Food Store with a great selection of products and prepared foods.

I am giving Deans 3 stars because I have had two frustrating incidents with the cashiers.

The first, was when the cashier made me wait for her while she was on the phone with another customer. She even left the counter at some point (while I was standing there) to ask a question to another employee about the person who was on the phone. I stood there for three minutes. As someone who worked in customer service, I do know that the customer who IS THERE and is standing at the counter always comes first. I was VERY tempted to leave.

The second was today. I wanted to buy a product that was on sale, yet you only get the sale price when you register for the Deans reward card (which is free). Well the cashier rung me up for the products and she immediately told me my total (without asking if I have a Deans card, or if I did not I could register for one FOR FREE to get the sale price). When I told her, aren't they on sale? She rudely said "Well you only get the sale price if you have a deans card...". To this I said, "Well, I do...." When I said thank you after she gave me my receipt, she did not say anything back.

For a market that is relatively pricey, I do think that their cashiers should be friendlier and definitely be retrained. It is definitely frustrating .

I have given this location too many opportunities and frankly I am just done. My VERY first experience was the Monday following their opening weekend (I had been out of town and couldn't be sadder to participate on grand opening. I'm a dietetic student and one of my hobbies is researching healthy food for good pricing, when I heard Dean's Market was coming to my town I was ecstatic!) That day I went to the juice bar only to not be welcomed, a simple hello, or even an acknowledgement with eye contact. I've worked food and retail so I appreciate it when others gave me time between customers before I moved on to my next customer, so I practiced this technique while trying to hide my excitement and wanting to ask all my questions to the first associate I saw. Patiently standing in front of the juice bar, the guy behind the blenders looks at me, I smile (hoping to get one back... never did) and found myself having a starring contest with him. As my discomfort grew I asked him if he was ready? he replied with, "what do you want?" in a ya ya can we move this along I got things to do tone. I gave my order and proceeded to the check out, which it being my first time, I had no idea that I had to pay at the registers and felt I was going to be asked to leave when I asked where do I go next? The cashier never looked up once and was glued to the screen of her register only muttering my total charges. Then I watched and waited for 25 mins for my 12oz smoothie to be made by the guy who clearly had better places to be. (I worked at a Juice It Up! smoothie shack for 2 years in high school and I can say I could make 10 smoothies in the amount of time it took him to make one - and I was the only customer who had an order! I left feeling as if I had been nothing but a bother to these people and was so angry that my excitement for this store was all for nothing!

I took my complaints to my neighbors and they encouraged I make a formal complaint. Which I did only because being in management I understand the value of a customer's complaint and the learning opportunity it can provide to an organization - especially in an area that has competition and I wanted this to be a successful place for me to shop at. I met with one of the corporations managers Tommy - who was so delightful and made me feel that I had good reason to make such a complaint. However, following his meeting, I found myself yet again in the same situation just a few days later. No acknowledgement and leaving feeling as if I had completely wasted another associate's time. I gave up for a few weeks.

Then my husband suggested trying them again, without any problems it was a sub-par experience but I would take it over my last few visits. Then I noticed whenever a manager was in the front of the store I got smiles and good customer service. However, when I noticed the associates were left to themselves I saw a lot of horse play and serve lack of customer service. I feel that I can go across the street to Shop Rite and get an equal product in customer service and food choice for less money, then at this location and I worked for Shop Rite - trust me they don't train to be helpful to customers they just need bodies.

Another irritating thing I witnessed while waiting for my smoothie one morning, was the phone ringing in the juice bar (this is how I learned you can call ahead and pick up) I stood there watching two associates laugh to each other "I'm not answering you pick it up." "No I answered last time, I'm not doing it again..." "Let's get "Joe" from the back to answer... Hey "Joe" can you answer the phone?" (man from the back walks out picks up a phone that I lost count of how many rings because I was happy but not in a good way to know I'm not the only person who has received terrible service from this location.)

I'm sorry Dean's I really tired to give you a chance and I am officially giving up on you. I've shared my concerns with my neighbors and fellow nutrition lovers and they agree the customer service among your associates is the one thing you don't offer.

So glad Dean's is a part of our town. Delicious foods and numerous choices. Need a quick bite - The chicken salad wrap is pure AWESOMENESS. Smoothies are awesome. Shopping options are plentiful. Educational events, helpful staff and a spotless shopping experience!
